The Satpathy family's personal web notebook

  The Family ...

The Satpathy family is originally from the rural areas of present day Bengal. My ancestors have lived and farmed in and around the village of Jamboni in the Medinapur district of West Bengal since the early 1700s. Now only my grandfather's younger brother and his family live and farm the family's land in Jamboni. The rest of the family has migrated to the cities of India and the USA.

We are Oriya brahmins by birth. Our mother tongue is Oriya, a language as old as the other North Indian languages like Hindi. Take a look at the web site of Samaj to see what the Oriya script looks like. Samaj is the leading Oriya daily newspaper published in Orissa.

I plan to put together a complete (as complete as we can make it) family tree with the help of my grandfather. I will post it here as soon as I can.

The immediate family is:

  1. Sisir Kumar Satpathy (my grandfather)

  2. Manorama Satpathy (my grandmother)

  3. Binoy Ranjan Satpathy (my father)

  4. Surama Satpathy (my mother)

  5. Gautam Satpathy (I)

  6. Padmaja Satpathy (my wife)

  7. Durgesh Nandini Satpathy (our eldest child and daughter)

  8. Jyotiraditya Satpathy (our son)

  9. Gayatri Satpathy (my younder sister)

  10. Samarendra Misra (my brother-in-law)

  11. Meghna Misra (my eldest niece)

  12. Sacchi Misra (my second niece

On my in-laws side, the family is:

  1. Sudhakar Padhi (my father-in-law)

  2. Manjula Padhi (my mother-in-law)

  3. Rohan Padhi (my brother-in-law)

  4. Nupur Padhi (Rohan's wife)

Satpathy

Sisir Kumar Satpathy

My grand father, Sisir Kumar Satpathy, was born in the year 1918. He is a kind hearted, quite man. He has been a farmer, a teacher, a school Head Master among other things. Today, he is the eldest in the family. It is strange but my grand father is the eldest child and a son, so is my father and I.

Manorama Satpathy

My grand mother, Manorama Satpathy, is an avid reader. It is she who instilled in me the love of a good tale. She is in her late seventies now but still reads voraciously. She reads in English, Oriya, Bengali and Hindi. I can only only read English. Sometimes I wonder about how much I am missing because of my lack of linguistic skills.

Didi, as well call here, is an accomplished lady. For as long as I can remember she has hand knitted all our woollen clothes. She used to beg, borrow and steal patterns to use in her creations. She is also a fantastic cook. He Ilish Match Jhoal is still my favorite.

Binoy Ranjan Satpathy was born on December 25, 1942. He did his schooling in the village primary school in Chilkigard, the village next to ours, Jamboni. He went on to earn a engineering degree in Metallurgy from Simbur college, Howrah.

He joined Rourkela Steel Plan in 1964 as a trainee engineer. He left Rourkela Steel Plant in early 2001 as the Executive Director (Works). He is now retired though he actively consults in his field.

Mani married Samar is Feb 1996. They were married in our old house (C-23) in sector 3, Rourkela. She completed her MSc. in Chemistry in May 1996 and left to join Samar in New Jersey. They had their first chld, Meghna (Meghu) in Jan 2000. Their second child, Saahi (Chikoo)  was born in November 2004.

Mani, send me a better picture. This is the only decent one I could find and I am not too happy with it. It is too dark.

Samarendra Mishra

I am going to ask Mani to fill in this section. That can happen only after the site is up. I will just say here that Samar is very nice person and perfect for my sister :-)

Meghna Mishra

Meghu, Meghu, Meghu !!! Thou art a princeses, indeed. And we all love you very much. I am Meghu's "Mamu" (mother's brother). Mamus are supposed to pamper their nieces silly. I don't get much chance of pampering either of my nieces. I only see them when they visit or when I am in the US. The last was in November 2003. Hopefully Mani and family will visit India later this year (2005)

Mani, please add to this section too.

I haven't seen the youngest member of the family other than in digital photographs. She is a beautiful baby and I look forward to seeing her and dangling her on my knee. Chikoo, as Saachi is called at home, looks a lot like my mother.

Rohan Padhi

The saala!!! Brother-in-laws are called Saala in Hindi and in Oriya (slightly more stress on the first 'a' in the case of Oriya but otherwise the same pronounciation). Saala is also a derogatory slang to throw at idiots who drive slow cars and cut infront of you when you are late for that meeting with the boss. You get the general idea, right?

Despite the unfortunate but unavoidable fact of being my saala, Rohan is a cool guy. We call him Gulu at home. He too studied in Ispat E. M. Public School (about 6 years below me). Got his degree in Electrical engineering from REC Rourkela (now NIT Rourkela). Joined Cognizant Technologies (CTS) in Calcuta (I prefer the old spelling! Do your worst, Budhadev!). Decided to get an MBA after two years. Went to FMS Delhi and chased the girls there (I hope) for a couple of years. Somehow managed to get a piece of paper with MBA on it next to his name. Conned the folks at CSC to give him a job at Indore. Got tired of the girls in Indore after a couple of years and decided to go back to his old company, CTS. This time in Pune, Maharastra. By this time his parents have had enough and decided that it was time to get the nut married. Finally he did get married to Nupur (poor girl) on May 4, 2005. To see his ugly mug getting married, click here.

Nupur Padhi

What can I say? She married my saala! I warned her but she didn't listen. On her head be it!

Nupur was born Nupur Diwedi. Her parents stay in Bhubaneswar, a couple of kilometers from my parents place. She has a MCA degree and works for Tata Consultancy Services at Pune. Actually she was with TCS in Bombay (so much better than Mumbai! Do your worst Thakrey and the other lunatics!) but got a transfer to Pune as soon as she got engaged to Gulu. Most probably to keep an eye on the nut. He does tend to need help finding his feet the first thing in the morning. She definitely wouldn't want to endure his company for more time than was necessary, right? I am right, right? I am, I know it! Anyway, off she trotted to Pune and ... Well, the less said the better. You never know who is reading this, right?
